Poverty Rate Highest Among Mothers, FFL Members Not HelplessSeptember 23, 2010 Dear Feminist for Life: The numbers released by the US Census Bureau documenting the number of people in poverty is simply staggering. Poverty data recently announced reveals that 43.56 million in the United States are poor, the largest number of poor people in the 51 years that poverty has been measured. The overall poverty rate, 14.3%, is the highest we've seen since 1994. But for Feminists for Life members, activists like you and me who actually walk our talk, the most significant and disturbing number is the increase of poverty among single mothers--a whopping 38.5% since 1998. Many feel powerless when they read such news. But to you and me it is a call to action. We don't want more women to be driven to abortion. We don't want mothers and children to struggle. We have a guide that can help. "Care Net is confident that Raising Kids on a Shoestring will prove to be an amazing resource for the thousands of women who visit Care Net pregnancy centers every year. Not only is it chock-full of ideas and practical advice on raising a family without 'breaking the bank,' it also delivers hope to women making life affirming decisions--a message that even less than ideal financial circumstances can be overcome with dignity and creativity!" So I am asking you to take action now:
Let's make a big impact right now. There are more than 3000 pregnancy care centers begging for our resource guide. There are 650 pro-life student groups who want to distribute "Raising Kids on a Shoestring" to key advisors on campus--advisors who need to inform women about the rest of the choices. School has begun. Our top priority is getting kits to the top 100 pregnancy care centers located near college and university campuses. Let's raise enough for at least 100 kits by Tuesday--100 kits that could help thousands of women! Because women deserve better,
